Banff National Park is a true Winter Wonderland with snow-topped mountains and alluring charm. This 4-day Banff winter itinerary was hand-crafted for a traveler who loves adventure and winter landscapes.
The crowds die off the second week of January, which is my recommended time to book. Also, keep in mind that Daylight hours are limited this time of year from 8:30 am to around 5:00 pm.
There are AMAZING places to eat in this town. Besides classic Canadian cuisine, you will notice that there are a lot of restaurants serving international food. Don’t knock Irish, Italian, and Japanese restaurants whilst visiting Banff!
Some of my restaraunt recommendations:
- The Maple Leaf
- Pacini’s
- Irish Pub
- Toulou’s
- 1888 Steakhouse in the Fairmont Banff Springs
Banff Winter Itinerary
Day 1 – Take an icey hike
AM: Ice Walk in Johnston Canyon with Discover Banff Tours. I recommend the early tour from 8 am-12 pm.
We booked with Discover Banff Tours and I cannot recommend this activity enough! The ice cleats they provided prevent you from slipping on the ice. Our tour guide gave us a history lesson on how the mountains and canyons were formed. Very informative, funny, and they even offer you a sweet treat of hot cocoa and biscuits halfway through the hike.
PM: Banff Hot Springs and/or Spa Day
After a full morning of hiking in the cold, it will be nice to sit in a hot tub or get a massage.
I recommend booking a 1-hour Swedish massage at the Cedar & Sage Spa. Also, look into the Willowstream Spa at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Purchasing a spa service allows access to their pools and steam rooms. They also have an outdoor hot tub with a view!
Day 2 – Explore Lake Louise!
AM: Dog sleading at lake Louise OR Sleigh Ride around the lake.
PM: Ice skate, Ice bar, and Hot Chocolate at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
Day 3 – Mountain Activities
AM/PM: Ski the Big 3! Choose between Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Lake Louise ski area.
Day 4 – Enjoy your day in Banff!
AM: Take a morning hike through the town to get coffee or hike the trails by the Surprise Corner Lookout.
PM: Go tubing at Mt. Norquay. Eat lunch at Clifftop Bistro.
Other notable activities:
- Snowshoeing
- Wolf-dog reserve
- Heli tours
